Honorary Yakkers from Denmark

I had the pleasure of hosting Tina and her daughter Joseffa 1 day this week. They are bicyclists from Denmark cycling from Vancouver, Wa to Los Angeles, Ca and decided to take a day off for some bike maintenance and kayaking. Both are new to kayaking but took to it like ducks in water. In fact Joseffa corralled a huge passing log and rode it like a pro.

Let the kayaking begin

Ahoy yakkers,

The weather is starting to look reasonable  so we are going to start our kayaking season with a couple of short kayak trips this week.

The first will be on Tuesday, July 3. We will launch around 2 p.m. from my dock on Schofield Creek.  The plan is to go upriver until we hit the first impassable log or tree across the river. In June, there were a couple of large downed trees across the river just around the bend from Oar Creek and it is likely that this will be as far as we will get. Be aware that we often have headwinds in the summer on the return route but the tides should be in our favor in both directions.

The second trip will be a Smith River trip on Thursday, July 5 similar to the one we did about a year ago. We will meet up at 10 a.m. at the Boat Ramp 11.3 miles up Smith River Rd as measured from the Hwy 101 / Smith River Rd intersection. We plan to paddle down river 3 miles, have lunch and then paddle back to the launch site. Some of us are also planning to continue up river past the put in point to extend the trip. Don't forget water, life vest, sun screen, snacks/lunch and if your boat is 10 ft or longer, an invasive species license. If you don't have a license, you can pick one up at Ace Hardware for a $7 annual fee. For more about the license click this link : ODFW Oregon Invasive Species - Aquatic

A Lazy Saturday Afternoon on Schofield Creek

Diane Novak and Becky Kaufman joined RiverBill on a kayak trip up Schofield Creek today. Becky used the pedals in Breezy for the first time and I think we have another convert to pedaling Kayaks.

7 of us  headed down Schofield Creek towards the 75 year old Umpqua Bridge on Friday night to do some kayaking under the stars and an almost full moon. The weather co-operated and gave us clear skies and gentle breezes.
